Takumi Craft Collaboration: Irourushi Nishikigoi (Lacquered Koi Chopstick Rests) in a Paulownia Wood Box

These lovely koi- (carp) shaped chopstick rests were made by Buddhist shrine craftsmen, Ryosuke and Fumiko Haga, who also specialize in urushi (lacquer) and gold leaf application. The colorful carp motif originated in Niigata, and each one has been made of natural raw materials using many labor-intensive steps in the process.

They come in a box made of Paulownia wood in the style of the traditional “Kamo Kiritansu” chest, made by Hiroaki Suzuki. Suzuki suggests that the carp can be viewed as if they were swimming in the flow of Paulownia, like jewelry in a box.

KOIOKI コイオキの群れ

The works shown here are unique, rarely found anywhere else. These craftsmen have combined their techniques, sharpened over decades of careful, detailed work, with an eye on innovative ideas – and some of these imaginative ideas were born in the midst of their focus on their traditional lifework. They can be seen as beautiful, playful, everyday items or, depending on the depth of your appreciation, as works of art.

What is important to know is that all of these works take time to produce, and cannot be made quickly. We ask you to be patient while awaiting delivery, and that you appreciate the anticipation you’ll experience imagining the piece being made moment to moment. In today’s fast-paced world, it makes your purchase all the more valuable.

Takumi Craft: Introducing the Traditional Crafts of Niigata Prefecture

The area encompassing Niigata Prefecture has long been a fertile ground for artisans, and it is known for its wide number of traditional crafts, which range from metalwork, woodwork, lacquer and fabrics to the careful construction of Buddhist shrines for the home. Japan’s government strongly supports the preservation of the specialized skills and materials required for the many craft disciplines, and has a number of criteria that must be met in order for them to be recognized: the crafts must be used in everyday life, must be hand-made, and the skills, techniques and materials must have been in use for over 100 years. They must also contribute to regional development.

Niigata has the second highest number of crafts products meeting these requirements after Kyoto, with 16 items from 13 different areas of the prefecture being recognized by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
